Pavlopoulos: Lausanne Treaty ‘non-negotiable’
In a statement aimed at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said on Saturday that the 1923 Lausanne Treaty which set the boundaries between the two countries is “non-negotiable.”
“There cannot be concessions or negotiations,” he said, adding, however, that Greece, which is “a window and door” for Turkey’s EU aspirations, seeks “friendship” with the neighboring country.
Pavlopoulos’s remarks follow repeated statements by Erdogan bemoaning the Lausanne Treaty as unfair on Turkey, as it lost islands that “used to belong to Turkey.”
