Separation of prisoners

When you took over, you said your immediate priority was to make prisons «more humane rather than breeding grounds for corruption.» How exactly are you going to achieve this? It is common knowledge that conditions in prisons are generally bad – if nothing else, this is because they house nearly double the number of inmates they are supposed to. We need new correctional institutions that are worthy of their name and so we have to speed up the construction program for new facilities. I would put particularly emphasis on creating new prisons, particularly for people with addictions, such as that in Elaionas, Thebes. Then (we are planning to) separate prisoners convicted of more serious crimes from those who have committee lesser crimes, then to separate prisoners according to sex, age and the nature of the crime. I would like to go further than that. What I would like to do is introduce modern methods of anti-crime and correctional policy so that prisons are no longer simply places of punishment, but centers for real correctional care that are aimed at rehabilitating these people back into society and the workforce.
