Cop plays robber with his colleague’s wallet

A policeman has been arrested for emptying a colleague’s wallet while the two were on a crime prevention mission in western Athens, police said yesterday. The 28-year old man, whose name was not made public, had been left to look after the patrol car when his colleague from the Aghia Varvara police station and their superior officer got out to inspect an establishment in the district of Haidari on Wednesday afternoon. The suspect allegedly took his colleague’s wallet out of the glove compartment, removed 890 euros and then threw the empty purse into a nearby rubbish bin. But the other officer soon noticed the theft, and informed his superiors. Suspicion immediately fell on the policeman who had stayed in the car, and, according to police, the man confessed, apologized and returned the money. The suspect was suspended and charged.
