‘UN plan or status quo?’

The current negotiations on the Cyprus issue have brought the island as close to a solution as it has been, US Ambassador Thomas Miller said in an interview last Friday. But the question that the negotiators now gathered in Switzerland had to ask themselves, he said, is whether «as a solution the Annan plan is preferable to the status quo and is advantageous to both sides. And that is really the question on the table.» Miller spoke also about security for the Athens Olympics, the unrest in Kosovo and the Middle East, and Greek-US relations (where he noted that past «irritants» were gone). «I believe that with a lot of hard work and effort you can have a safe, secure Olympics,» Miller said, noting Greek and US officials were drawing up their reports following the major «Shield of Hercules» exercise. «I think it was a tremendously useful learning experience. I think we learned a lot about each other and ourselves,» he said.
