Greek leaders hail Macron victory, hope for fruitful ties

Emmanuel Macron received words of encouragement form Greek leaders yesterday after winning France’s presidential election on Sunday.

“This is a breath for France and Europe,” tweeted Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after it was clear that Macron had routed far-right rival Marine Le Pen. “I am confident we will work together very closely so Europe can change direction and inspire its people.”

The government believes that Macron’s victory is a positive development in relation to debt relief as the centrist politician has declared himself in favor of restructuring Greece’s debt.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Macron’s victory was a “good day for Europe.” “It is a victory for common sense and a moderate approach against the forces of populism and euroskepticism,” he told Skai Radio.

“The conclusion is that the traditional parties have to change,” he added.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos sent his congratulations to the former French economy minister, adding that he is confident Greece and France will continue to have a “fruitful” relationship.asfa
