Mitsotakis warns of further impoverishment

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated the accusation that the agreement signed between the government and Greece’s creditors is tantamount to a fourth bailout with more austerity attached.

Speaking at an event for self-employed professionals at the Hub complex in Athens on Saturday, Mitsotakis said the deal agreed by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the leader of the junior coalition partner Panos Kammenos will lead to more hardship for the Greek people without additional funds for the country.

“It is unheard of that the country has committed to implementing measures beyond 2018, without securing more funding,” he said, adding that the “reality is” that the measures due to be voted in Parliament on Thursday target financially weaker people through pension cuts and by lowering the income tax threshold.

The government, he added, doesn’t represent self-employed professionals and believes it can squeeze people dry regardless of whether they can cope or not. “It crossed all its red lines and got nothing in return,” he told the audience.
