Church starts public debate on constitutional review

The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece will hold an open event on Wednesday to discuss the government’s plans to review the Constitution and the question of the separation of Church and state.

The event, which will be attended by Archbishop Ieronymos, aims to launch an open dialogue and public debate on the issue. It will be the first among many events planned by the Church of Greece across the country to discuss all aspects pertaining to relations between Church and state.

Wednesday’s event, titled “Review of the Constitution and the Church of Greece: A Contribution to an Open Dialogue,” will take place at the Athens War Museum, starting at 6.30 p.m.

Ieronymos also briefed Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios, the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, on the topic during their meeting Tuesday.

Vartholomaios praised the Church of Greece’s endeavors to help those hardest hit by the Greek financial crisis.
