UN presents draft common document for Cyprus talks

Ahead of the June 28 Cyprus conference in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, Greek-Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis Wednesday informed Cypriot political party leaders on the draft common document, regarding security and guarantees, he received earlier in the day from the UN secretary-general’s special adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide.

According to reports, the document, drafted by Eide, is short and aims to provide a guideline ahead of the conference, and to ensure that the security of one ethnic group is not secured at the expense of the other side.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has insisted that progress in the chapter concerning security and guarantees is key to a breakthrough in the talks.

“It will create sound prospects to further bridge the differences between the two sides during the discussions that will follow thereafter, in order to achieve not just substantial progress, but even a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem,” he said.
