Reservations about genetically modified crops
Many areas have been declared «free of genetically modified organisms» by prefectural decree. What is your view? For as many months, years or decades it takes for the scientific community to reach a definite decision on these products, we will continue to have our reservations and will resist policies on the production and circulation of these products in the European Union. Some people in the EU are discussing these problems, making important political decisions to serve economic interests. Here, we cannot make any concessions. As of April 18, EU legislation comes into effect whereby products containing genetically modified ingredients of over 0.9 percent will have to be marked accordingly. Has the system been organized? No action has as yet been taken and it is an issue we are very concerned about. Will the transfer of food inspections over to the ministry be made immediately? We are planning for this for right after the Olympics.
