Spurned love leads to fiery murder, suicide

A married man who failed to persuade his ex-girlfriend to resume their relationship, doused her and himself in gasoline and then set fire to both of them, in the Piraeus suburb of Keratsini yesterday. Both died of their injuries. Costas Lambrinos, a 45-year-old father of three children, was waiting for his ex-girlfriend Maria Tzanetou, 27, outside her home in an apartment block at around 4 a.m. yesterday morning. Neighbors said they heard the two arguing and then the woman screaming in agony. Her father, Spyros, raced outside to find his daughter alight but he was unable to extinguish the flames. He sustained burns to his face and arms trying to save her. When the fire brigade arrived, both Tzanetou and Lambrinos were dead. A spokesman for Blair said the premier would almost certainly talk to his Greek counterpart, Costas Simitis, about the issue at the EU summit over the weekend if it was not resolved by then, Reuters reported.
