Thessaloniki bomb suspect is charged

A 26-year old Thessaloniki man was charged on Saturday with attempted arson following his arrest on Friday in the act of planting a gas-canister bomb under a van in the northern city – where over 60 such attacks have taken place over the past 10 months. The suspect, whose name was not made public, is to appear before an examining magistrate tomorrow. Police sources said yesterday that the man is being investigated for involvement in previous arson bombings, for which local anarchist groups are held responsible. Police caught the suspect placing the crude bomb under a van owned by a private security firm. An accomplice escaped. Raids on three Thessaloniki flats produced documents and a computer that are to be examined by counterterrorism officials. The arson campaign has targeted banks, public sector buildings and diplomats’ cars.
