Mother’s boiled head found in son’s fridge

A mentally disturbed laborer was arrested in the Cretan town of Hania yesterday on suspicion of having decapitated his mother and cooked her head. Police said Yiannis Karalakis, 34, killed his 65-year old mother, Maria, with a kitchen knife in his house in the district of Halepa before using a mattock to sever her head which he then boiled in a pan of water and placed in the fridge. The man, who reportedly had a history of mental illness and was under a psychiatrist’s supervision, then phoned his father and told him he had killed his mother. The elderly man went round to his son’s house accompanied by policemen, who arrested the laborer. Police quoted Karalakis as saying he had been overcome by a sudden desire to kill his mother, who had become a regular visitor as her son’s health deteriorated.
