Enough space for 2004 waste

Attica’s landfill site at Ano Liosia will have no trouble handling some 11,000 extra tons of garbage expected to be produced by Olympic visitors, athletes and missions during the August Games, according to the president of the Attica Association of Municipalities. But he warned that the site’s capacity would not last another 16 months. Giorgos Mastorakis said the association had provided for extra space to handle the extra garbage produced during the Olympics, which was equal to two days’ worth of Attica’s regular waste production. He also said municipal workers had reached an «informal agreement» with the authorities not to strike during the Games and to work as many hours as necessary. As for the long-term future of the Ano Liosia site, Mastorakis said that although problems noted by the European Union in a study submitted last August by the association on new waste management sites had been rectified, the study had not yet been approved.
