Ministry, Chios authorities set to clash over plans to expand Vial camp

The Migration Ministry and municipal authorities on Chios look set to clash over the government’s plans to expand a reception center for migrants on the eastern Aegean island.

Authorities on Chios are planning to lodge a new appeal against the ministry, taking out another injunction in a bid to block the planned expansion. Local residents have stepped up their opposition to the project over the past two weeks, obstructing efforts by the ministry to transport prefabricated homes to the Vial camp, a former factory.

Meanwhile concerns are growing about plans by the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn to organize a protest on the island on January 31.
