Two police officers injured in shootout

Two police officers were injured in a shootout with a 37-year-old man on Monday night in the town of Arta in western Greece.

According to police, the incident occurred after the 37-year-old opened fire with a rifle, for unknown reasons, on a car with a couple and their child on board.

The driver and his family managed to escape unharmed and notified police who tracked him down an hour later in Aghios Dimitirios in the region of Peta.

However, the suspect started shooting at the two officers as he tried to elude arrest. He was eventually immobilized after sustaining serious gunshot wounds and was hospitalized.

One of the officers was shot in the leg and the other received a bullet in the stomach area.
