ELA witness spared perjury humiliation

The key prosecution witness in the Revolutionary Popular Struggle (ELA) terrorism trial yesterday ended 14 days of continuous testimony with defense lawyers demanding her arrest for perjury. Sofia Kyriakidou, the estranged former wife of ELA defendant Angeletos Kanas, has identified both her former husband and his fellow defendant, Irini Athanassaki, as members of the extreme left-wing group. But she infuriated presiding judge Elissavet Brilli by implying she knew more about the group than she cared to tell – at one time threatening to spill the beans on TV. Yesterday, lawyers for Kanas and Athanassaki claimed Kyriakidou had not told «the entire truth,» and that her evidence was fabricated. But Brilli said that, so far, there was no indication the witness had perjured herself. The trial of five ELA suspects opened on February 9.
