Vouliagmeni beach off bounds due to Games

One of the capital’s most popular paying beaches will be closed throughout the summer season due to the August Olympics, state tourism officials said yesterday. The Vouliagmeni beach, 25 kilometers south of the city center, will be shut pending works ahead of the August Games, when the beach will host part of the triathlon event, Hellenic Tourism Properties (HTP) said. HTP is a state company managing public properties such as beaches, casinos, hotels and extensive real estate assets. HTP said workers would be demolishing some of the seaside installations, building a new road, planting more greenery and putting up temporary spectator stands. Athenians will have trouble reaching the beaches this year, with much of the east coast inaccessible due to roadworks. During the Games, motorists will be constrained to one lane on major roads, to ease Olympics-related traffic.
