Athens police investigate man’s death after mugging

Police detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of a 25-year-old man, who fell from a height onto rocks on Philopappou Hill in Athens after being mugged on Wednesday night.

The man’s 23 year-old-girlfriend, who is from Portugal, told police that shortly before 11 a.m. on Wednesday night, three people approached demanding money, threatening them with a knife.

However, the young man’s girlfriend has been unable to provide police with precise details of how he fell as she did not witness the incident.

According to her statement, the two of the perpetrators overpowered the 25-year-old while the third grabbed the woman’s bag, taking money, a cellphone and some personal papers from it.

The woman said that, as was watching the man going through her bag, she suddenly heard a voice behind her. Turning around, she saw her boyfriend falling from the rocks.

Her boyfriend fell from a height of about 20 meters. Sometime later, his body was found.

The perpetrators fled and disappeared, while the woman alerted the police.

Initial autopsy findings suggest the man was not stabbed and died from a blow to the head consistent with a fall.

Police sources said the woman has not provided concrete information on the nationality of the perpetrators.
