Church and state talks topped by payroll issue

The government’s proposal to strike clerics off the state’s payroll topped the agenda of Thursday’s meeting between Education Minister Costas Gavroglou and a special eight-member committee from the Church of Greece.

The proposal to remove clerics from the state’s payroll – and to pay them instead via an annual state subsidy to be managed by the Church – was rejected in November by the Holy Synod.
