ATM blown up in Cretan village, suspects flee without cash
An ATM in a small village in western Crete was blown up on Wednesday night but the would-be robbers appear to have fled empty-handed, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported on Thursday.
The incident happened in the village of Platanos, in the prefecture of Hania. The unknown vandals are believed to have channeled flammable gas into the cash machine before igniting it to cause the explosion.
They also smashed the glass entrance of the supermarket where the ATM had been installed but were unable to retrieve the cash inside the machine.
Police in Athens also reported two ATM blasts early on Thursday – one in Patissia at 3.10 a.m. and one in Nea Smyrni at 3.30 a.m. In both cases, the machines were destroyed while there were no reports of any injuries.
