Roads to close for marathon
The main avenue linking central Athens with eastern Attica will be closed to traffic for much of tomorrow for the women’s marathon race. Although the Olympic event will be held between 6 and 10 p.m., restrictions will gradually come into effect from 3.30 p.m. between the village of Marathon and the Panathenaic Stadium in central Athens, along Marathonos, Mesogeion, Vassilissis Sofias and Vassileos Constantinou avenues. Parking along the route will be forbidden all day. Furthermore, Asclepiou and Ippocratous streets in central Athens will be closed to all non-Games related traffic from 4.30-10 p.m. The Stavros-Katehaki section of the route will close at 5.30 p.m. and the Katehaki-Hilton section at 6 p.m. The stretch between the stadium and the Hilton will be off-limits to traffic from 4.30 p.m. Traffic will be able to cross the route at the junctions with 17 Noemvriou, Aghiou Ioannou Theologou, Katehaki, Fokidos and Vassileos Alexandrou. Restrictions will also apply from 7-10.30 a.m. today between Varkiza and Vouliagmeni, due to a triathlon cycling race.
