Gunman shoots fringe journalist outside home

Journalist and publisher Stefanos Chios was in intensive care on Monday after being shot outside his home in Vrilissia, northern Athens, in the early hours of the day.

His condition was reportedly serious but “under control.” The publisher of fringe newspaper Makeleio was shot in the neck and the torso at around 3 a.m. by a hooded man, reports said Monday.

The perpetrator and an accomplice fled the scene immediately after the shooting, while the injured journalist managed to get into his car and drive to the nearby Sismanogleio Hospital, where he was given first aid before being transferred to the KAT trauma hospital.

According to associates of the journalist, he tried to push the perpetrator with the door of his car and this move may have saved him.

There were also reports that the perpetrator’s weapon jammed before he could fire a third shot. Police are waiting for the journalist to sufficiently recover so he can make a statement and help in the investigation to establish a motive for the attack and track down the perpetrators.
