Coast guard charged with killing burglar

A coast guard officer was expected to appear before a navy court today, accused of shooting a burglar dead early yesterday morning. Chief Petty Officer Markos Logothetis was arrested yesterday at his home in the Athens coastal suburb of Ano Glyfada. Police say the 37-year-old claims two men broke into his second-floor apartment at roughly 4.30 a.m. and stole two wallets, credit cards and his ID card. Logothetis initially claimed to have only fired in the men’s direction with his service revolver in the belief that they had shot at him. However, police found no evidence to corroborate the claim that a shot was fired by the intruders. The bullet hit one of the men in the right shoulder and he was later pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. His identity is not known and he had no papers with him. The second burglar escaped unhurt, and is still at large.
