A swimmer competes…

A swimmer competes in the men’s 400-meter freestyle race at the main swimming center during the Athens Paralympics yesterday, on the second day of events. Organizers said spectator interest in the Games is high, with nearly 400,000 out of the 500,000 available tickets having been sold, bringing in some 4.5 million euros – well over the 4-million-euro target. A total of 3,837 athletes representing 136 countries are participating in the Games. Although below initial estimates, this is still an all-time record. Some 15,000 military and police officers are providing security for the Paralympics. Yesterday, Greece won its first two Paralympic medals, both for swimming. Haralambos Taiganidis came first in the men’s 100-meter butterfly race, while Yiannis Costakis took bronze in the men’s 100-meter freestyle.
