A striking municipal employee takes part in a demonstration through central Athens yesterday. Unionists, who launched a two-day strike yesterday, are demanding a basic salary of 1,100 euros. Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyannis appealed to strikers to call off their action in view of forecasts of ‘extreme weather conditions’ that will play havoc with mounting piles of trash. The situation is expected to be aggravated as rubbish collection services are restricted over the weekend.
