Rio-to-Antirio suspension bridge…

The six-month-old Rio-to-Antirio suspension bridge was closed off to traffic shortly before 11 a.m. yesterday – and is expected to remain closed for several days, creating considerable traffic problems – after suffering what seems to be minor damage during a heavy rainstorm. The operating company for the 2.25-kilometer suspension bridge, Gefyra SA, said one of the hundreds of cables caught fire and subsequently snapped, apparently after being struck by lightning. The bridge had already been evacuated, and nobody was hurt. Gefyra SA said there seemed to be no structural damage.
