Public wants Church and State separate

As President Costis Stephanopoulos yesterday insisted that the country’s political system was capable of coping with the ongoing crisis in the judiciary and Church, two new polls indicated that, in the wake of the scandals, most Greeks want a separation between Church and State. «We have a form of government that can be fearlessly and proudly compared to any other in the West,» said Stephanopoulos on a visit to Pieria in northern Greece. However, almost 65 percent of Greeks want there to be a clear separation between the Church and State according to a poll conducted by Kappa Research and published in Sunday’s To Vima newspaper. A VPRC survey published in yesterday’s Eleftherotypia put the figure at one in two. Meanwhile, hundreds of faithful gathered outside the residence of the bishop of Larissa on Saturday to demand a clean-up of the Church.
