ACID ALERT

Major operation deals with spill Twenty firefighters, six fire trucks and a special vehicle to mop up chemicals were called out to Keratsini in southwest Athens on Saturday, after a lorry carrying containers of hydrochloric acid overturned. The lorry was safely removed and the acid cleaned up without any injuries. Public Order Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis said it was the biggest operation of its kind ever to take place in Greece. Sewage Residents of Keratsini protested on Saturday against plans to incinerate some 450 tons of partially treated sewage daily at a nearby processing plant on the islet of Psytalleia until a new processing plant is built in mid-2007. Public Works Minister Giorgos Souflias said the incineration would not cause environmental problems. Car plunge The body of a 26-year-old man was pulled out of the sea next to the Thessaloniki concert hall on Saturday night after his car plunged into the water. Gun accident A 25-year-old man died yesterday in a village in the Lagadas area near Thessaloniki when his single-barrel shotgun exploded during target practice, lodging a piece of metal in his heart.
