Parades to close off city center

A large area of central Athens will be closed off to traffic, including public transport, this morning and tomorrow to help the city accommodate the parades marking tomorrow’s celebration of Independence Day. From 9 a.m. tomorrow, traffic will gradually be barred from major roads in the center of the city, including Amalias, Vassilissis Sofias, Panepistimiou and Stadiou, to allow pupils from schools around the capital to hold a parade. Similarly, streets in the areas around Omonia and Syntagma squares will be closed to cars and public transport tomorrow, when the main military parade will take place, from 7.30 a.m. – apart from Mitropoleos Street, which will be shut from 6.30 a.m. – until roughly 1 p.m. Public buses and trolleys which normally pass through the center of Athens will be diverted around the parade route today and tomorrow. Also, the X95 bus which runs from Syntagma Square to Athens International Airport will not be operating until after the parades. Passengers can use the X94 line which begins at Ethniki Amyna metro station instead.
