A green space for Faliron

At long last, the site of the former racecourse in Faliron has been designated as an urban green space. The decision on this site is the outcome of a long tug of war within official circles, and involves local government as well. Among the plans for the Faliron complex are an ecological park, sporting facilities for track events and team sports, and service areas (such as changing rooms, toilets, storerooms, guardhouse and outdoor areas for people to meet). The marina built next to the Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) will become the National Seasports Center and retain the facilities of the sea sports, sea scouts and fishermen’s organizations that were already established in the area. Also planned are auxiliary facilities, a boat supply station, technical services for boats, administration offices and shops. The indoor arena at Faliron is being converted to a conference center, while the beach volleyball court will be used for cultural events. Shops, meeting places, sports club offices and a training center will be permitted in the outdoor and indoor areas of SEF.
