The Olympic Stadium complex (OAKA) will become a center for sport, tourism and recreation, while two museums will be built on the site of the International Broadcasting Center (IBC), according to the Culture Ministry. The new uses, said the minister, «do not negate the principal purpose of the venue, which is sport. The basic layout makes it a familiar destination for visitors and a major source of income for its maintenance and operation. A special pathway called the Olympic Walkway will be created, taking the work of Santiago Calatrava as a central point of reference, which will be open to the public.» Outdoor and indoor shops and restaurants will be permitted on the site but not department stores. OAKA will also host exhibitions within the existing buildings or in temporary structures in the surrounding area. The IBC will house the Museum of Greek Olympic Games and the World Museum of Classical Athletics. Part of the cost of constructing the museums will come from Third Community Support Framework funds. Current building regulations permit the subdivision of the buildings into smaller sections for the museums. Shops, public areas, offices and doctors’ surgeries are also to be permitted on the IBC site.
