Work resumes on Acropolis walkway

All traffic will be banned as of Tuesday from Apostolou Pavlou Street, under the Acropolis, pending work to transform the central Athens thoroughfare into a pedestrian area, authorities announced yesterday. Following the completion of work on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street – the first 800-meter section of the walkway that will link Vassilisis Amalias Avenue with Pireos Road – the digging machinery will now move in on 910-meter-long Apostolou Pavlou. It should be ready by the end of 2003, according to Unification of the Archaeological Sites of Athens SA (EAXA), the public company managing the 4.7-billion-drachma project, which is already several months behind schedule. Yesterday, EAXA said that, as well as Apostolou Pavlou, sections of the Philopappou Hill ring-road will also be closing down.
