A thick cloud of dust from North Africa envelops Athens, severely reducing the visibility from Lycabettus Hill yesterday. Weather experts said it was a normal phenomenon for this time of year, brought on by gale-force southerly winds, the symptom of what are often called ‘Saharan depressions.’ The dust also engulfed Crete, the Peloponnese and the Aegean islands, leading to the cancellation of flights and ferries to and from Crete.
