Possible blockade…
A bulldozer pushes mounds of garbage at the capital’s main landfill in Ano Liosia, northwestern Athens, yesterday as police took up positions around the dump to prevent a possible blockade by local residents. They have threatened to block the main access road on Sunday unless the government makes public its plans to build three new landfills in Attica. Local authorities, as well as residents, are angry at plans to transfer thousands of tons of treated sewage from Psyttaleia to the landfill over their vociferous objections. Athens’s top prosecutor, Dimitris Papangelopoulos, ordered police officers to ensure the sludge reaches the dump.
