Athenians cool off at the fountains…

Athenians cool off at the fountains in the city center on Syntagma Square yesterday during a hot and sunny afternoon and as they prepare for more hot weather, due this week. Forecasts, however, still fall short of the heat wave that swept through Italy over the past few days as Italian media reported the deaths of at least five elderly people from the heat. In the worst heat wave to hit Italy since 2003, water levels in the neighboring country are also falling, putting crops at risk. The temperature in Athens over the next few days is expected to hit a high of around 34 degrees Celsius (93F). Temperatures in the rest of country are also set to rise, meteorologists say.
