Vehicle license plates run out

After repeated failed attempts since last year to find a company to supply license plates for newly registered cars, the Transport Ministry admitted yesterday that its shelves were empty and some 10,000 cars a day were being registered and provided with handwritten plates. The government issued a tender last May in search of a supplier for a new type of license plate that would be compatible with EU regulations, but the process deteriorated into repeated legal wrangles. The tender has been reissued twice since then and the latest deadline for bids is July 24. «With the time needed for this process to be completed we will have to wait another three months, since 350,000 vehicles a year are registered in Attica and 150,000 in the rest of Greece,» Evangelia Tsaga, managing director at the Transport Ministry, told Kathimerini, adding that the ministry was trying to find a short-term solution within 10 days.
