Prime Minister Costas Simitis takes a look at buildings…

Prime Minister Costas Simitis (l) takes a look at buildings going up at the Olympic village at Thrakomakedones on the northwestern outskirts of Athens during a visit yesterday with Labor Minister Dimitris Reppas (r). Unexpectedly, construction workers presented him with a petition describing their working conditions as ‘modern-day sweat shops.’ They said they could not guarantee the completion of the work, scheduled for early 2004, if conditions do not improve. On the other side of the dividing line, Cypriot government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the report was forwarded on Monday, 11 days after the government sent a similar report to Denktash. During a meeting early this month, Denktash and Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides agreed to exchange reports on missing Cypriots as part of the ongoing process to achieve a permanent solution to the island’s occupation and division.
