Anarchists focus ire on CCTV security cameras
Five more traffic cameras installed as part of the massive Olympic Games security operation last year were wrecked by anarchists over the weekend, just weeks after seven other cameras had been similarly gutted. Authorities said that anarchists set fire to the cameras on Saturday in what they called a coordinated attack on the surveillance equipment, all located in five different parts of Athens. Early last month, hooded youths had destroyed seven cameras. In all, 293 CCTV cameras were installed before the Olympics as part of the one-billion-euro security campaign aimed at protecting the massive sporting event. The Hellenic Data Protection authority has since placed severe restrictions on them and ruled that they can only be used to monitor traffic.
