Tourists relax on a beach near Athens…

Tourists relax on a beach near Athens, enjoying the Halcyon Days of mid-winter. Temperatures in the capital hit 22 degrees Celsius yesterday. A high of 18C is forecast for today. Despite record snow falls in January, which caused widespread transportation problems, the fine days of winter arrived on time. The Halcyon Days are named for the legendary birds (identified as kingfishers) which were said to take advantage of the good weather to build nests on the calm waters. Christos Polyzogopoulos, chairman of the General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE) yesterday said he agreed with such an idea. GSEE, which represents all private sector unions, led protests against last year’s reform proposals which culminated in two massive demonstrations in Athens.
