Authorities seize more bad food

THESSALONIKI – Unpackaged foodstuffs containing lice and worms as well as supplies of oxidized olive oil have been seized in separate inspections by prefectural market officials in Thessaloniki over the past few days. A packager of olive oil who also supplied children’s summer camps has been charged with selling olive oil that was oxidized and falsely labeled as «virgin,» although it had been mixed with other seed oils, according to a prefectural official. According to sources, suspicions had been aroused by the very low prices quoted by the packager, Pavlos Indas of Stavroupoli, for supplies to a children’s camp in Stavros, Thessaloniki in early July, after which deliveries to the camp were stopped. All batches of the oil in question have been blocked from sale. Meanwhile at an unnamed supermarket in Thessaloniki, inspectors found lice and worms in unpackaged pulses, rice, pasta, cereals and flour. Officials said 112 kilos of these foodstuffs were seized and destroyed.
