ND record blasted by PASOK

PASOK leader George Papandreou accused the government on Saturday of not living up to its pre-election promises and charged Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis of being cut from an old hue and not having any new ideas. Speaking at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) exactly one week after the premier delivered his annual keynote speech on the Greek economy, the Socialist leader blasted the government’s record since it came to power last March. «Greece is missing the train of progress and prosperity,» said Papandreou. On the topical issue of the demise of Olympic Airlines, he accused Karamanlis of undermining the company’s position when the prime minister delivered his TIF speech by saying that the carrier could no longer continue in its present form. The opposition leader was also highly critical of the government’s foreign policy. He said that by ruling out the possibility of vetoing Turkey’s European Union membership talks, which are due to start on October 3, Karamanlis was «surrendering his arms before the battle had begun.»
