Relations with the US and Europe
The US does not stop talking (more positively than in the past) about Greece and the prospect of «strategic» bilateral cooperation. How do you interpret that in specific terms? The truth is that there has been a lot of often misleading (intentionally or otherwise) discussion around this issue. For example, the unfounded criticism that, by developing good relations with the US, Greece will be joining the «Atlantic» group having abandoned, or at least neglected, its European policy. Let us make certain things clear regarding the present and the future. Our European policy is the backbone of our general foreign policy. We want a truly united Europe, not only politically and economically, but with regard to defense. At the same time, however, we want and are maintaining the best possible relations with the US at all levels, based on mutual respect, because we believe that is in the country’s interest.
