Ire at fund’s ‘lost’ millions

Angry shop owners in Volos, central Greece, yesterday demanded that authorities track down and punish whoever is allegedly responsible for up to 5 million euros which has gone missing from their pension fund. The National Confederation of Greek Commerce (ESEE), which represents the store owners, wrote to the Labor Ministry and the Social Security Fund for the Self-Employed (OAEE) yesterday demanding that measures be taken to protect pension funds after checks revealed that some 4-5 million euros was missing from the Traders’ Fund in Volos. The money appears to have been collected from some 350 store owners in the area who belong to the fund, but it is not clear what has happened to it since. ESEE asked that assurances be given to the shop owners in question that their pensions are not at risk. The union also asked that those responsible should be prosecuted regardless of «how high they find themselves.»
