Migrant killed in truck chase

A road chase involving a truck transporting 12 illegal immigrants close to Preveza, northwestern Greece, ended yesterday with the death of one of the migrants and two others being seriously injured. Police said that they began pursuing the vehicle, which had been stolen from Athens, after the driver failed to stop at a routine roadside traffic inspection on the national highway. The chase ended when the truckdriver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a post as he tried to slip through a roadblock that police had set up to stop him. A 20-year-old male immigrant who had been riding in the back of the truck was killed. The driver, an Albanian national, and two other illegal migrants were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while the remaining people on board the truck suffered minor injuries. All of the illegal migrants had crossed into Greece from Albania and were being taken to Athens.
