Man dead in city hotel fire
An elderly man, who was not further identified, died in a fire that broke out at a central Athens hotel late yesterday, authorities said as firefighters managed to save four other people that were trapped by the blaze. The Fire Brigade said that most of the people at the Hotel Etoile managed to escape the blaze, which broke out around 8 p.m. before firefighters arrived at the scene. Rescue operators blocked off Tritis Septemvriou Street, one of the busiest streets in the center, and rescued the two men and two women from the hotel’s burning roof using fire trucks and extending ladders. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire but authorities said that the blaze was not connected to the annual march in Athens yesterday. Three people were taken to the hospital with respiratory problems.
