Nicosia Chinese dined off local dog population

Cypriot police are investigating recent canine disappearances in Nicosia after a group of Chinese students confessed to killing a number of dogs snatched off the capital’s streets, which they then cooked and ate. According to press reports in Cyprus yesterday, the six Chinese flatmates’ dietary habits came to the authorities’ attention after aliens’ department officers looking for illegal immigrants raided their Nicosia flat a few days ago. Although the students’ documents were in order, their dustbin was not. Police found large numbers of dog bones in the rubbish and smelled a rat. The reports said the Chinese openly admitted to eating dogs, pointing out that such meals are customary in their country. They said they took the animals off the streets to the flat where they slaughtered, cooked and ate them. Nicosia police said the students had not been charged, as there had been no complaints regarding missing pets. «This death is a tragedy and our hearts go with his family,» Cmdr. Hal Pittman, spokesman for the US Atlantic Fleet’s Naval Air Force, said in a statement.
