Mob takes over at university
Two students were badly beaten in Thessaloniki yesterday by some 40 people who took over the Theological School at the city’s university and were vandalizing the building, authorities said. The students were in stable condition in a local hospital yesterday after being attacked in the morning by members of the mob, who broke into the building. The group is made up of «fringe elements» and not anarchists, according to the school’s dean, Christos Economou. Authorities said the mob was protesting the death of a 30-year-old man on Saturday after he was allegedly beaten by policemen. Police deny that they ever took the man into custody, and the coroner’s reports show that he died from a swollen lung. The protesters have destroyed a number of lecture theaters and offices, Economou said.
