United Nations soldiers cut through barbed wire dividing the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot controlled sides of Nicosia yesterday. Works to open up a road linking the divided capital’s main shopping district – severed for more than 40 years – broke ground on Thursday. Local authorities on both sides of the barrier say its removal is key to boosting commerce in the city, but diplomats consider it unlikely to help revive stalled peace talks.
