A crane maneuvers in front of a giant cigarette billboard on top of a Syntagma Square building. Under a wide-ranging plan – a central feature of which is the pedestrian walkway under construction that will link the principal archaeological sites of Athens – to tidy up the city center ahead of the 2004 Olympic Games, tens of thousands of advertising signs and billboards will be removed from building facades on the capital’s main streets. Omonia Square has already been cleared, while work is rapidly proceeding at Syntagma Square.
