8,000 police to patrol streets over holidays
With the Christmas season a favorite time of year for criminals, government sources said some 8,000 police officers will patrol the streets of Athens daily for the next couple of weeks to help make the city safer. Police officers in uniform will monitor commercial districts round the clock across the Attica region while plainclothes officers will join the masses of shoppers flocking to stores. Police will also keep a closer eye on bus and train stations until January 8. Sources said police had been ordered to put a lower priority on paperwork and spend more time out on the beat. Officers will also carry out more alcohol tests on drivers and implement stricter traffic measures, sources added.
